WEEK 4 - Gondolier, Grand Canal - Oil on Canvas 10" x 10"

Did you know a gondolier, under Venetian law, must have been born in Venice to practice this profession. On our trip to Venice this year we saw many gondolas, mostly transporting tourists.

Please enter your vote for your favorite painting for this month or leave a comment in the comment section below. If you are interested in purchasing any of the four paintings, go to www.davewatland.com for more information.

WEEK 3 – Lunch in Dubrovnik - Oil on linen 10" x 10"

SOLD

This was from the walled city of Dubrovnik. It was quite something to walk in the streets of this old city.

On October 1, 1991 Dubrovnik was attacked by the JNA with a siege of Dubrovnik that lasted for seven months. The heaviest artillery attack happened on December 6 with 19 people killed and 60 wounded. Total casualties in the conflict according to the Croatian Red Cross were 114 killed civilians, among them the celebrated poet Milan Milisić. In May 1992 the Croatian Army liberated Dubrovnik and its surroundings, but the danger of JNA sudden attacks lasted for another three years.
Following the end of the war, the damage caused by shelling of the Old Town was repaired.

There are still remnants of war marking the city walls and streets. This painting depicts two residents looking for lunch, I call it Lunch in Dubrovnik.

Painting Musings

It is day nine of my painting for 2008, and I have to say I love the change. I think the best decision was to do a painting a week. It has helped me to focus on short term goals that are managable. The format for the Painting a Week is 10" x 10" and at first I thought that would be a reasonable size to work at, but as I'm now on my second painting, I'm finding it's a bit of a challenge to lay out a picture in a square format. Even though it may be a challenge, it creates opportunity to grow in the composition and layout side of a painting. Fifty one and a half more to go.

As you might have noticed, I've added a slide show to show you other recent work. To see more go to www.davewatland.com

Thanks again for your interest.

WEEK 1 - Lady of Plaça Catalunya, Barcelona Spain - Oil on Canvas 10"x 10"

The first painting I've chosen to paint is the statue at Placa Catalunya, Barcelona, Spain. We spent two days there in August of 2007. I was captured by the beauty and simplicity of this staute, the reflection on the water and the glances of the two subjects. As you look at this painting you can imagine the thoughts of the woman on the left or the quick glance over the shoulder by the man. I hope you have fun interpreting your own story as you look at this piece.

First Painting Almost Complete!

I will post my painting of the week on the 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th day of each month. Thank you for all the emails and encouraging comments. It has been a good couple of days of painting and look forward to revealing my first of 52 paintings on the 7th of January.

One question was asked, "So are we able to make suggestions for what you paint?" Yeah, I'm open to suggestions, but that's called a commission. For the first 8-12 weeks I will be painting some reflections on our Mediterranean Trip from August 2007.

Another question, "What is the cost if interested in purchasing?" Each painting will be 10" x 10" in oil, acylics or watercolours with no frame or matte. The cost of each painting will be $195.00. I will honor on a first come basis.

The goal is 52 weeks in a year, on the 7th day of each week I will produce a 10" x 10" painting that I will post on this site and my web site www.davewatland.com. If the painting interests you and you would like to purchase it, you can email me and I will honor it on a first come basis. Feel free to comment and interact with me throughout the year.
